Avon Valley Explorers tackle Gold DofE

By David Coatham, Assistant Explorer Scout Leader for Avon Valley ESU.

A great picture of Avon Valley Explorers Gold DofE group at the end of their assessed expedition on Exmoor, completed a couple of weeks ago.

All 4 have come through the sections together and 2 are about to do A levels so managed to get this completed before they get into exam season and go off to Uni. Very good 4 days-below zero the first night on top of the moor and some rain the last night but otherwise OK. They started off a bit sluggish, but finished very strongly, particularly on the last day when they flew round.

They even managed an unplanned lap of honour around Dunster, thus bypassing the finishing line set up by the supervisors. As you can see, they even managed some smiles for the camera.

Football Fever for Sandleheath Beavers

By Martine Coatham, Group Scout Leader for Sandleheath.

Sandleheath Beavers started the summer term off with a burst of activity on our field, a football training session led by the local youth team football coaches. Great teamwork amongst the Beavers and the leaders got involved as well – fantastic start to the term, well done Beavers.

Scout Experience Survey

Please share the below link and encourage as many leaders, parents, carers and young people as possible to complete the survey. All the information on what the survey is about and why it is needed is explained on the link. Plus there’s a reward for districts who get lots of responses relative to their size.

Copythorne Carnival Run

By Paul Stubbington, Assistant Explorer Scout Leader for Magellan ESU.

Entries for Copythorne Carnival Run (5k & 10k) are going well and we now have a good number of runners from local clubs and park runs signed up as well as local residents.

We’ve also got great support from local businesses that will have stalls including Alton Sports, The Barista Bike and Sustain Therapy. The Guides will also have a drinks and sweets stall and the Explorer Scouts will be serving some delicious burgers and hot dogs.

Every entrant will receive discount vouchers from Alton Sports, comprising 10% online plus £60 to spend on kit when
buying a pair of shoes in store. We also have vouchers for the top 3 in each race and gender, plus spot prizes for other runners.

Entry is only £7.50 or £12.50 which is a bargain when you get a discount voucher, plus finishers medals and chip timing. If you’re interested in taking part then I would suggest signing up soon as we might find ourselves rapidly heading to our maximum numbers.

Please share this on your own social media. More info HERE.

A shout out for someone to support our District please.

Is there a budding journalist out there, or a team, that would like to produce our monthly District newsletter?

It does not necessarily need to be an adult, maybe one of our Explorer Scouts, a District Helper, a District SASU Member, parent etc. Lynn can support with distribution, templates etc. if you are interested, please email Team DC or give Lynn a call on 07595 991824.

On the same subject we were a bit short on articles this month. If any local events take place or get planned, plus any exciting/unusual programme activity that we can share with the District, please send articles and pictures in at any time and we will hold them for the next publication.
