Welcome to Edition 50 of Tails of the New Forest. We hope you’ve all had a good week for half term and ready to race into our final term where (normally) outdoor activities take centre stage giving our young people those important skills for life and a place to belong. Make sure you share your adventures with us: [email protected]!

What’s coming up?

Make sure you check out the updated District Diary which was emailed out to all members alongside this edition of Tails. Any dates you want to add? Email [email protected] and we will add them in. We’re not mind-readers, so do make sure you share.

In case you missed it, you are welcome to the District AGM, taking place this coming Thursday 4th June at Harry’s Island campsite from 7pm. Details and reports are on our website here.

As we enter carnival season, more and more of our Scouts will be out and about in the community and showing off the best that Scouting has to offer. You can catch 2nd Copythorne (Stanley’s Own) being pivotal to the Copythorne Carnival on 6th June and all the events surrounding it, and the 6th take centre stage on 27th June for the Netley Marsh carnival. Plus, 3rd Ringwood are hosting a community BBQ on 20th June so we wish them luck!

Looking further ahead:
  • GLV and Group Chair support days, 6th June and 13th June
  • District Scout Summer Camp, 25th July to 1st August
  • Young Leader B-K weekend at Lyndhurst, 19th-20th September
  • Fun Days at Ferny Crofts: Squirrels on 19th September and Beavers on 20th September.
  • Cubs Muntjac Trophy on 20th September at Burley
  • Stag’s Head Trophy for Scouts, coming September TBC.

Reminders, opportunities and notices

The Copythorne Carnival Run 2026 on the evening of Monday 8th June, is down a couple of volunters due to recent drop-outs. The event is a massive fundraiser for the 2nd Copythorne (Stanley’s Own) Scout Group and they expect to smash the previous record profit of £10,000 this year, welcoming over 1,000 runners.

The event can’t go ahead without a large number of volunteers who come back year after year, some of whom have no ties to the Group whatsoever. If anyone is available on that evening and could spare at least a couple of hours please email [email protected].

The first week of June is nationally recognised as Volunteer’s week, so make sure you thank your teams and the parent helpers for all they do and remind them of the power of volunteers working well together in teams to make Scouting happen. We’ll be using the week to share some of the volunteer roles within the District that we’re looking to fill for all our groups.

Short version: they’re on a break.

The Safety Checklists cards, or White cards, are pocket‑sized tools designed to support everyone involved in Scouts to understand their role in keeping activities safe. Whether you are a Team Member, a Lead Volunteer or part of a Trustee Board, each checklist reflects the policies and guidance you need to support safe, inclusive and adventurous Scout experiences.

They were updated this month. You can find online copies on scouts.org.uk and printed copies available to pre‑order from the Scout Store, with stock expected in late May to early June.

What’s been happening?

A huge thank you to the small band of volunteers who chipped in to tackling jobs at our District Campsite, Harry’s Island. We plan to make these a regular occurrence, so if you couldn’t make it this time keep an eye out for future dates.

We all know, the longer days mean more outdoor adventures and Sandleheath are showing this off perfectly with a varied programme:

Scouts and Explorers at Fordingbridge recently spent a night away with a different, sleeping in bivvy shelters they built themselves. Take a look below at their impressive strcutres:

We hope that Stanley’s Own band enjoyed their Music from the Movies concert a couple of weeks ago, catch one of their songs from their Facebook below:

Remember you can stay up to date with what’s going on on our Facebook page (/newforestscouts) or Instagram (@newforestscouts). Plus if you’re a volunteer you can be part of the Facebook group for members too. Do remember to share your stories with us throughout the month so we can share them directly and keep having great Scouting adventures.

Robin.
