Scout young people as young as four years old right up to 18 years have this month taken over Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre near Beaulieu Road for the first ever New Forest District Scout camp.
The biggest and most ambitious camp the district have ever attempted saw hundred of volunteers from ten Scout groups across the district – only one couldn’t make it.
As well as making sure their young people had the best time, they also brought creativity through an ‘Around the World’ theme and activities to add to the ones capably supplied by the Ferny Crofts team.
Young people could have a try at target sports like archery or tomahawk throwing, get physical with the cave bus, climbing, high ropes or country games, try something new like circus skills or volleyball or just have a blast on inflatables, sumo suits and bouldering.
Plus there was a craft zone, making floating miniature boats which worked really well, traditional pioneering and Backwoods cooking alongside so many others.
The busiest day by far was Saturday when our Cubs and Scouts, many who had joined us on Friday evening, were joined by Beavers for the weekend and Squirrels for a day of packed activities. Saturday evening came alive with two campfires, one full of camp favourites for the Cubs up and one with family favourites and plenty of repeat after me songs for the Squirrels and Beavers.
We took a big swing with this camp, and we’re thrilled the experiences of our young people was so positive. We’re not sure when, but District Camp will return, with ideas tested and reflections absorbed for an even better event next time.
